Very Easy Interview – Overall Negative Experience – No – Wed, 11 Nov 2015
Interviewed null -1(took 5 days)
Complete waste of time for any experienced professional! The first "interview" is really just a guise to get you to go in so they can see how you look (age, and other things not visible on resume, if you get my drift) and take an IQ test in person (in addition to 5 other tests on personality, sales, math). They also are interested in knowing your salary and expectations. Every other company in the world does this over the phone so that they don't waste your time or their time. Evidently Uline likes to keep a lot of Human Resources people employed so they require candidates to drive from afar, take time off of work, get dressed up, etc. It really is profoundly unprofessional, and they don't even seem to know it.
Be forewarned -- if you saw a good salary advertised with the job posting, it is probably a bait and switch tactic, or false advertising. It was apparent when I got there for the first "interview," they had no intention of paying the advertised amount (even though that was what I was currently making and I had the requisite experience). The interview took all of five minutes and while the HR rep was very nice, she was not interested in any of my answers except for the salary figure. After that was given, it was over and she said they'd contact me in about a week (said they work very fast).
True to her word, they contacted me within a week and said they would pursue other candidates who had the experience and background closer to their needs (mind you, I have seen this position advertised for months so I doubt there are tons of candidates competing at the same time). Very comical, because they called me in for an interview based on the experience given on my resume, didn't ask any questions about my experience or background in the interview, and after seeing me in person and learning my salary (which was within the range given in the ad), decided I wasn't right for the job. Never even got to the interview where I would actually discuss my qualifications.
A friend belongs to a job search support group and said Uline's reputation within that group is horrible and most people had negative things to say about the interview process. They guessed that perhaps they look at the IQ scores and try to hire people at the lower end, because the company does not value innovation or leadership. They want people who will do as they're told. The HR rep told me they also want people who will stay there a long time; they don't want workers using it as a stepping stone to a better job.
Interview Questions
She asked me twice why I wanted to work at Uline. Otherwise just basic questions about strengths, weaknesses and why I want to leave my current position.
